Agriculture Programs
School Gardens
With the help of volunteers from Many Hands and Convoy of Hope, Abaco Strong has implemented a hydroponic farming system at Patrick J Bethel High School in Central Abaco, giving the students an opportunity to learn the latest techniques for sustainable agriculture as well as traditional farming methods. Amongst other things, they’ve been harvesting tomatoes, lettuces, and herbs… and most recently, we were able to provide the school garden with two chicken tractors and chicks. Fresh eggs coming soon!
School gardens offer many benefits that enrich the educational experience and nurture the development of student participants. By fostering a deeper connection with nature, promoting healthy habits, and cultivating essential life skills, these green spaces empower students to become informed, engaged citizens, capable of making positive contributions to their communities and the world at large. This program is made possible in conjunction with the Agriculture Department of the Bahamas, the Abaco Club at Winding Bay and the TK Foundation.
Aquaponic Gardens
Abaco Strong, in partnership with The Blue Atlas Project, sponsored the first Aquaponic Community Garden in Abaco. The aquaponic system consists of a 410-gallon fish tank and 34 aquaponics grow rafts that hold 600 plants. The Community Garden acts as a demonstration garden for sustainable agricultural practices, in addition to providing organic vegetables for participating community members.
Backyard Farming
In response to the urgent need for decreased dependence on food imports and lower household food bills, the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources has embarked on a Backyard Farming Program in The Bahamas. We have over 300 families participating in backyard farming in Northern and Central Abaco, and Abaco Strong is offering support by providing seeds, seed starters, pots, fertilizer, top soil, and fruit trees.
